Becka Robinson’s Newcomer Group at Nooksack Elementary held a Thanksgiving “Feast” last week. Each Wednesday morning, the Newcomer Group brings together students to practice authentic language. Holding a Thanksgiving meal—this one may not have had turkey, but it did have mashed potatoes, gravy, rolls, apple cider and pumpkin pie—gave students a chance to invite staff and practice both writing invitations and then having conversations around authentic scenarios, such as a popular holliday. The group will continue its efforts on Wednesdays, covering everything from discussing days of the week to pets.
